Never Knowing Why

Summertime it drags on by

On the western plains

Some’ll cry, try to get by

Without no rain

When evening comes

We’re thankful for the sweet sunset

But the night might bring the wind

So we can’t forget

No, no, no

Hear the bird sharing his words

It’s a mystery

Some have heard the joy of life

On his wind-swept beak

But some hear a warning

That’s borne in the summer heat

You can’t solve the riddle of life

On the devil’s streets

Why, why, the answer was there

But it slipped on by

Try, try to open the door

That was locked by time

By and by you get tired of fighting

So you just lay down and die

Here and then the silence

Is broken by a eulogy

Sad words wishing and hoping

For a lasting peace

Then comes a war and everybody’s

Heart is gripped with fear

But this time it’s winding on down

To the final year

Why, why, the answer was there

But it slipped on by

Try, try to open the door

That was locked by time

By and by you get tired of fighting

So you just lay down and die

Never knowing why

Never knowing why

Summertime it drags on by

On the western plains

Some’ll cry, try to get by

Without no rain

When evening comes we’re thankful

For the sweet sunset

But the night might bring the wind

So we can’t forget

No, no, no
