While mending a fence on The Double Cross Ranch, Jasper Miller hears a woman cry for help. A search of the surrounding area reveals nothing, but that evening at the ranch house he sees something white manifest in the near distance that quickly vanishes. Jasper, an honest cowboy with daydreams of getting rich off his unique breakfast sausage, is worried he might be losing his mind.
He soon finds that’s not the case as one cowhand complains of seeing eerie flashes of white and another speaks up about hearing the mournful cries of a woman in distress. When Jasper hears the feminine scream once more, followed by a flare of white identical to what he’d witnessed previously, he decides someone must be pulling a prank. But the woman finally does appear—wraithlike and spectral—and he’s convinced she’s a ghost.
The ranch’s billionaire owner, T. Wayford Cross, gets a taste of Jasper’s sausage and decides to market it, setting him up in an apartment in Arlington. There Jasper meets voluptuous Selma Russell, who he learns is connected to the spirit on The Double Cross and is almost as ethereal. Caught in a love triangle between Selma, T. Wayford’s daughter, and the woman in charge of producing his sausage, Jasper discovers it’s him rather than the ranch being haunted. He surmises the specter is motivated by revenge, but for what, he has no idea. Knowing he’ll never have peace until he finds out, Jasper is forced to take drastic action in order to uncover the mind-boggling truth.
